A member of the MediaLab’s HealthComm project, Dr. Anna Sendra Toset, together with her colleague Dr. Sinikka Torkkola, has recently published a new book titled Healthcare and Patient Communication in the Digital Era: A Patienthood and Patient Perspective.
The book draws on critical empirical data to explore how the digitalization of healthcare communication reshapes the experiences of patients, re-spatializes and re-temporalizes care, and reconstructs the meanings of patienthood and ill health.
Through three interrelated perspectives—disease (medical), illness (patient), and sickness (societal)—the book examines how communication practices influence health and illness in today’s connected healthcare environments. Published by Routledge, it fills a significant gap in health communication scholarship, offering valuable insights for academics, graduate students, and healthcare professionals responding to the challenges of the digital era.
The HealthComm team extends its congratulations to Dr. Sendra Toset on this achievement, which closely aligns with the project’s broader goal of deepening understanding of how communication shapes patient experiences, healthcare delivery, and public health in an increasingly digital world.
