Professor Carlos Elías joins international debate on science, society, and disinformation

Carlos Elías, a senior member of the MediaLab, and the Jean Monnet Chair on Disinformation and Fake News at the Carlos III University of Madrid recently participated in the debate “Science, Society and Disinformation”. Organised by the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB), Professor Elías joined renowned philosophy of science scholar, Naomi Oreskes, and other colleagues for a discussion on the relationship between scientific knowledge, society and the growing challenges posed by disinformation.

The debate provided an international and interdisciplinary forum for examining the changing relationship between scientific expertise and public trust. Against a backdrop of an increasingly fragmented information environment, the discussion addressed the challenges faced by scientists, experts and institutions in communicating reliable knowledge and

maintaining public confidence in scientific evidence.

Professor Elías contributed his research perspective on the role of the media, experts and scientific institutions in the production and circulation of information. His participation also reflects the broader focus of MediaLab misinformation, pseudoscience and conspiracy theories in Spain and Europe, as well as his work as Jean Monnet Chair on Disinformation and Fake News, bringing academic research on disinformation into public discussions about science, society and trust.
