Guillermina Franco Álvarez

Guillermina Franco Álvarez is an associate professor in the Communication Department of the U. Carlos III of Madrid. She is graduate in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid and bagged a Doctor in Information Sciences (Journalism) from the University of La Laguna. She has sixteen years of professional experience in the media and academics, including being responsible for the Communication Office of the INEM, (National Employment Institute), and Director of the Graphic Arts Occupational Training Centre in the Canary Island. She has also been the Parliamentary correspondent in the Congress of Deputies in Madrid for Diario de Las Palmas and La Gaceta de Canarias. Her research interest, amongst others, includes, Journalistic Design, Infographics, Information Visualisation, and Maps in the press, (Specialised Visual Narratives), Migrations, Racism and Treatment in the Media. She has more than 80 scientific and technical documents published in indexed journals apart from proceedings published in conferences, 8 of which are included in the Proceedings database in JCR.
Maria has participated in 21 competitive projects, serving as the PI in 5. Additionally, she has completed research stays at the (JOMEC) School of Journalism and Cultural Studies at the University of Cardiff (U.K.); U. of Chicago (Illinois); U. of Wroclaw (Poland); U. Guadalajara and U. Virtual of Guadalajara (Mexico); Brighton (Mathematical Computing and Information Sciences) and (Centre for Learning and Teaching) in (Brighton U.K.); U. Cabo Verde (Cape Verde); Cheik Anta Diop (Senegal); and USP (U. of Sao Paulo) Brazil. She is currently an active member of research groups at different universities including the Autonomous University of Barcelona, (MIGRACOM), UC3M (Work, Family and Gender), University of Málaga (Communication and culture laboratory- COMANDALUCIA). She has supervised several doctoral theses, as well as TFGs and TFM in the course of her official teaching.
