Carmen Peñafiel-Saiz is a Journalism Full Professor in the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She studied Information Science and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in 1982 and a PhD with Cum Laude Honours in 1992 by University of the Basque Country. Prior to working in education, she worked at Cadena SER (Spain’s premier radio network), at Radio Popular Bilbao, and at Radio Euskadi-EITB. I was also a fellow guest on the radio programme ‘Escrito en el aire’ of RNE-País Vasco (the Spanish State’s public radio entity in the Basque Country). She has worked in university teaching since 1987 in the field of Journalism. This has been marked by varying management and administrative responsibilities including the coordination of Journalism degrees; leadership of the launch of new Study Plans; head of the Journalism Department between 2001-2008; member of the Government Council for the University of the Basque Country, of the University Staff, of the Board of the Social Sciences and Communication Faculty (at different stages), Director of the Master’s Degree in Social Communication, and Director of the PhD programme in Social Communication. Carmen has participated in a total of 30 research projects, being PI in 14 of them. Her scientific production has been favourably accredited by the National Agency of Quality Assessment FECYT-ANECA with six sexenniums. She has had six quinquenniums and has published in numerous renowned impact journals. Throughout her academic life, she has published 201 scientific texts; 131 works presented in scientific congresses; 49 participations in scientific/technical/assessment committees, etc. Carmen has also been an assessor on the Academia programme for ANECA (National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation) in the field of Social Sciences; of Research projects in ANEP (National Agency of Assessment and Future Planning); and member of the Accreditation Committee in the Quality Agency of Castilla y León (ACSUCyL and she collaborates with the State Research Agency (AEI). She has been a member of staff in ANECA and member of the management team under the direction of Professor Mercedes Siles. Since 2008 she has held directorship posts in the Spanish Association of Communication Research (AE-IC), and has been a Board member since 2012, currently holding the post of president. In addition, since January 2022 she has been on the Board of Directors of the Basque College of Journalism and the Basque Association of Journalists.
