Uxia Carral
Uxia Carral holds a PhD in Journalism (titled ‘Application of AI tools as a methodology to analyse toxicity in social media conversations’) and teaches in the Department of Communication at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Her lines of research interest focus on toxicity in social media and technological innovation applied to online communication. She is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in an R+D+I project at the Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE) through a link with the Institute of Gender Studies (IEG). She is a member of the research group 'Analytics, Media and Public Engagement: Communication, Journalism and Technology Lab' (UC3M MediaLab), where she has participated in several European and Spanish research projects such as the Jean Monnet Chair "EU, disinformation & fake news". She also actively collaborates with the educational project, Learn to Check, to combat disinformation and promote media literacy. Previously, she has worked as a journalist in the radio station, Cadena SER, and in the fact-checking platform, Newtral; as well as research assistant in the European projects OpenEUDebate (UAM) and EUCOPOL (UC3M). In 2022 she was the winner of the third edition of the Ideograma - UPF Chair Award on Political and Institutional Communication, and in 2024 she participated in the winning team of the & quot;Students speak: a vision of the future" contest of the Telefónica Chairs Network in the framework of the Telefónica Centenary. Carral is the author of several scientific articles, book chapters and co-author of the book 'Comunicación Europea: ¿A quién doy like para hablar con Europa?' (Ed. Dykinson, 2019).
Andrea Langbecker
Andrea Langbecker holds a degree in Journalism from the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, a master’s in public health from the State University of Sao Paulo, a Ph.D. in Public Health within the realm of social sciences in health from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and a Ph.D. in the Media Research programme from the Carlos III University of Madrid. My work experience includes roles as an editor and reporter for Brazilian newspapers, specifically in the cities and health sections. Additionally, she has worked as a communication advisor at the Institute of Collective Health at the Federal University of Bahia. Currently, she is a professor in the Department of Communication at Carlos III University of Madrid, a professor at the Faculty
of Social Sciences at UNIR, and an associate editor of the Spanish Journal of Health Communication. She has published scientific articles and contributed to book chapters in edited book series within her area of research interest- Health Communication. She has also participated in conferences both as an attendee and as a speaker at national and international congresses.
Felipe Núñez Sánchez
Felipe Núñez Sánchez is a PhD candidate in Media Research at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), supported by a national FPU fellowship. His doctoral research focuses on climate change and the social perception of science, investigating how media influence public understanding and attitudes towards environmental issues. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Humanities, with a minor in Sociology from UC3M. He also earned a Master's degree in Cultural Theory from the same institution. Additionally, he completed a specialized postgraduate program in Statistical Techniques and Machine Learning at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, complementing his expertise with statistics, survey analysis, and R programming courses. His academic interests lie in science communication, social behaviour, media effects, and quantitative research methods.
Maria Concepcion Barrigos
Concha Barrigós is the Director of Strategic Communications, Corporate Affairs and News Relations at the Teatro Real. She holds a PhD in Journalism from the Universidad Carlos III, where she teaches as an associate professor, and until joining the Teatro Real, she was Editor-in-Chief of the Efe Agency, where she has been the head, at different stages, of its Culture and Entertainment, Society and Science and Future sections. She has also been Editor-in-Chief of News at Telecinco, founder and director of Cable Canal Salud and founding partner of the communication magazine Joiner.
Małgorzata Kolankowska
MaÅ‚gorzata Kolankowska earned her doctoral degree from the University of Wroclaw. She graduated from Spanish Philology and Journalism. Kolankowska is an assistant professor at the University of WrocÅ‚aw, where She teaches at the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication. Additionally, she is a translator from Spanish into Polish. She has published the books Czerwony i Czarny: Polski spór medialny o Chile (Red and Black: Polish Media Discourse on Chile) (2013) and Wyspa. Mamo, przyjedźcie! Powiedzieli mi, że mam raka and various papers on Spanish and Polish media, literature, culture. She is particularly interested in the interdisciplinary study of the relations between media, literature, culture, and cultural and collective memory, especially in literary and visual journalism. She is the projects' coordinator of the Olga Tokarczuk Ex-centre. Academic Research Centre at the University of WrocÅ‚aw. Her primary areas of research interest encompass the interconnections between journalism and literature, contemporary reportage, non-fiction literature, memory studies, and novel digital formats in journalism. As the person in charge of coordinating projects at the Olga Tokarczuk Ex-Centre. At the Academic Research Centre, she also places emphasis on the
translations and the reception of Olga Tokarczuk's literary works throughout the globe. She is also interested in the connection between cancer patients and their surroundings, even though oncological communication is a crucial one. She is also the author of a non-fiction book about parents of children with cancer.
David García-Marín
David García-Marín is an Associate Professor and Researcher at the Department of Journalism and Corporate Communication at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC). He is a guest professor in several masters in digital
communication, new pedagogies and transmedia journalism at UNED, where he has also directed several courses on digital media and disinformation. Previously, he was a professor at Carlos III University, where he taught the subject Media Theory in English in the bilingual degrees of Journalism and Cultural Studies. His research areas focus on podcasting and digital audio, disinformation, fact-checking and transmedia journalism. In 2021, URJC awarded him the Innovative Teachers Award for his project entitled From podcast to interactive video. Transmedia methodology for the subject New Technologies and Information Society. In 2023, he received the EPI-Scimago Award for the Best Scientific Article in Communication of the last 5 years (2018-2022). Researcher of the Jean Monnet Chair EUDFAKE: EU, Disinformation and Fake News funded by the Erasmus+ Program (European Commission), directed by Carlos Elías (Full Professor of Journalism at Carlos III University). He is part of the National Task Force against Disinformation Campaigns funded by the Department of Homeland Security of Spain. He is a member of the Media Literacy Mario Kaplún Chair called Hoy es mañana, belonging to the International Centre for Higher Communication Studies for Latin America (CIESPAL). He currently holds the position of Coordinator of Institutional Development in the Faculty of Communication Sciences at URJC. He is also a member of the URJC Research Ethics Committee.
Alberto Ardèvol-Abreu
Alberto Ardèvol-Abreu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Social Work at the University of La Laguna. According to the indicator developed by Stanford University with data from Scopus, he is among the top 2% most influential scientists in the world (https://bit.ly/3tWbBrR). Alberto obtained his Ph.D. in Communication Sciences with his thesis on news framing of humanitarian crises in December 2013, after completing predoctoral research stays at the University of Texas at Austin and the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (Mexico). He holds the i3 certification for an outstanding research career from the Spanish Ministry of Universities, a six-year research term (‘sexenio de la Comisión Nacional
Evaluadora de la Actividad Investigadora’) for the 2013-2019 period and a recognized five-year teaching period ('quinquenio docente', 2014-2021). Dr. Ardèvol’s research interests focus on new media and political communication. He is particularly engaged in the enquiry about positive and negative effects of internet-based media use on civic and democratic life. His latest publications explore potential implications of new media- related phenomena for democracy and political participation: conspiracy beliefs, fake news, citizen journalism, political polarization, or online political discussion. Alberto Ardèvol-Abreu is also engaged in theory building and theory testing in Communication (especially in connection with framing and agenda-setting theories). Some of his recent studies have received important national and international awards. Among them are best article award on politics and information technologies from the American Political Science Association (APSA), the Denis McQuail Award from the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) for the best article advancing communication theory, the Robert M. Worcester Award from the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) for the outstanding article of the year, and the Drago Latina 2013-2017 Award for the most cited article in five years published in the ;Revista Latina de Comunicación Social.
Carlos Maciá-Barber
Carlos Maciá-Barber holds a PhD in Journalism, and he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M). Her lines of research have a distinctly interdisciplinary view: news reporting (in-depth report, chronicle, photojournalism), media ethics (gender, minors, health) and public understanding of science (history, archaeology). He was a Principal Researcher of the projects “Ethics and informative excellence: implementation and consolidation of ethical practices in the journalistic organizations” (CSO2010-15575/COMU), and “Ethics and informative excellence and journalistic deontology facing the expectations of citizens in Madrid” (SEJ2006-05631-C05-03/SOCI), from the Spanish National R&D&I Plans of the Ministry of Science and Innovation (2008-2011) and the Ministry of Education and Science (2004-2007). He is currently responsible for the Strategic Research Action “Journalism, ethics and fundamental rights” (2024-2030). On the scientific side, he is a member of the Julio Caro Baroja Institute of Historiography (UC3M) and the Spanish Association of Communication Researchers (AE-IC). He is a reviewer of the research and development projects around Social Sciences for the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (Spain), the National Agency for Research and Innovation (Uruguay) and the Narodowe Centrum Nauki (Poland). In the academic field, he has been Vice Dean of the Degree in Journalism and the Double Degree in Journalism-Humanities (2013-2023) at the Faculty of Humanities, Communication and Documentation (UC3M), and deputy director of the Department of Communication (Journalism and Research) (2012-2018). Rut Gomez Sobrino
A former reporter based in the Middle East; Ruth shifted into international development in the mid-2000s. Since then, she has lived and worked in over 30 nations (MENA region, Africa, Latin America and Asia) under UN agencies like UNESCO, UNDP, UN Women, UNCDF and UNWTO. She currently operates as Campaign Director at the EU Delegation to Sudan. Good governance and anti-corruption, gender equality, electoral processes, climate and sustainable development and human rights have of indigenous communities been some of the themes she addressed in the last two decades. On the academic front, she has served at entities like Malmö University, Georgetown University and Shanghai International Studies University, where she Lectures on C4D, Public Diplomacy, UN and International Organizations since 2021. Besides a MA in International Relations (Istanbul Bilgi University), Ruth also completed a Diploma in Development Management and a PG Certificate in Poverty Reduction at the University of London. She has a DEA in Economic Policy (2015), and she is preparing the dissertation of her PhD thesis on the Information Society before the end of 2024.
Roberto Ruiz Ballesteros
Roberto Ruiz Ballesteros has a doctorate in Journalism from the Complutense University, a degree in Journalism and Communication from the University of Navarra, a master’s in journalism from the newspaper ABC and the Complutense University and a Master in Journalism and Security from the San Pablo CEU University and the General Directorate of police. He has worked as a journalist for 20 years in newspapers such as El Confidencial, Expansión or ABC. He has written economic, investigative and trial reports. He has taught classes at the Nebrija University, at the UNIR, at the Complutense University, at the Policía Nacional, at the UOC and at the Carlos III University, where he has remained for 10 years. He is managing partner of the communications consultancy specialized in litigation Ballesteros. His research interest focuses on the parallel trial, reputation and prior condemnation that occurs in the public opinion before the judicial sentence.
Jorge Tuñón
Jorge Tuñón is Jean Monnet Professor “ad personam” and professor at the Carlos III University of Madrid. He is also an external scientific expert of the European Parliament and the European Commission, an evaluator of European projects, and a collaborator of the College of Europe, the National Institute of Public Administration of Spain, the OBS Business School, the La Caixa Foundation, among other institutions. He has experience as a journalist (EFE Agency and Mediaset) in addition to having worked for the National Institute of Public Administration in Madrid or for the European Commission in Brussels. Currently, he frequently collaborates as an analyst in different media outlets. Previously, he obtained his European Doctorate (Extraordinary Award) at the Complutense University of Madrid in Communication, International Relations and the European Union, after graduating in Law, Journalism and Political Science. He currently has more than 15 years of experience as an academic and researcher in social sciences. He stands out for his extensive international career, including international organizations, and his solid record of high-impact publications. Accredited as a University Professor by ANECA, he has directed and participated in national and international research projects, as well as being the author or co-author of nearly a hundred publications. Focused on the communication of European Affairs in times of disinformation and pandemic, Jorge Tuñón: leads the European project “FUTEUDISPAN, Future of European Communication against the disinformation pandemic” (2022-2025); co-directs the European project “EUDFAKE, European Union, disinformation and fake news” (2019-2022); in addition to being part of the research team of the European Network “OPENEUDEBATE, European Open Debate” (2018-2022); as well as the European project “European Future Challenges” (2020-2023).
